In the 1960s, Chris Mayfield was an aspirant guitarist from Kent starting
out with local group The Moral Set. He progressed to working with Nirvana,
Gene Latter and Johnny Gustafson (late of the Big Three) and Christian St
Peters. He then joined up with a pre Mott the Hoople Ian Hunter and Freddie
Fingers Lee in the group At Last the 1958 Rock and Roll Show before becoming
a van driver for Amen Corner. Through this connection, and his girlfriend’s
efforts, tenor sax player Mike Smith (who became Mayfield’s manager
thereafter) shopped Mayfield’s demos around and got him a deal with EMI.
This led to a couple of singles on Parlaphone (that sell for
