Le origini del gruppo genovese Garybaldi risalgono al 1965, anno in cui il chitarrista Pier Niccolò “Bambi” Fossati, insieme a Maurizio Cassinelli (batteria), Angelo Traverso (basso) e Marco Zoccheddu (chitarra), fonda i Gleemen, autori di un omonimo LP pubblicato nel 1970: un ottimo album, legato ancora a certe sonorità anni ’60, ma in cui lo stile hedrixiano di Bambi Fossati comincia a farsi sentire.
Nel 1971 la band cambia nome in Garybaldi e l’anno successivo pubblica il leggendario “Nuda”, disco in cui le sonorità tipiche del rock progressivo si mischiano al ‘chitarrismo’ di Fossati, dando vita a un lavoro unico e importantissimo nella scena prog-rock italiana.
Il 1973 vede l’uscita di “Astrolabio”, album molto particolare composto da due lunghi brani, uno per facciata, dove ampio spazio è lasciato alle improvvisazioni. Un altro disco unico, con cui si chiude la prima fase della storia della band, che proseguirà la propria attività a fasi alterne fino ai giorni nostri.

The origins of the Genoese group Garybaldi date back to 1965, when guitarist Pier Niccolò “Bambi” Fossati, together with Maurizio Cassinelli (drums), Angelo Traverso (bass) and Marco Zoccheddu (guitar), founded Gleemen, and released an eponymous LP in 1970: an excellent album, still tied to the typical ’60s sounds, with hints of Bambi Fossati’s hendrix-esque guitar style.
In 1971 the band changed their name to Garybaldi and the following year they released the legendary “Nuda”, an album in which the typical sounds of progressive rock was mixed with Fossati’s tyipical ‘guitarism’, giving birth to a unique and very important work in the Italian prog scene.
1973 sees the release of “Astrolabio”, a very particular record made up of two long pieces, one for each side, with a lot of space left for improvisation. Another unique work that closes the first phase of the band’s history, who would continue their music activities in alternate phases up to the present day.
