Released in 1966 and never reissued on vinyl, “Al Charly Max…” is a very rare LP containing 14 beatles’ cover songs; as reported in the liner notes, it is a “tribute from young Italian musicians who first received the message of the Beatles”, faithful to the original melodies and song structures but adequately “filtered by their personality and by a stylistic research commitment”; the presence of the flute in particular enriches a collection of tracks that works from the first to the last note.
Augusto Righetti, a classical-raised guitarist, was one of the best known names in the ’60s Milanese club circuit; it is said that he became friends with Cliff Richard from The Shadows, and perhaps it was no coincidence that his first band was called Augusto Righetti e le sue Ombre, authors of a single rare LP, “The New Sound Group” (1964). Three members of the group will soon become I Camaleonti.
“Al Charly Max…” was born from the meeting, in 1965, between Righetti, the band he used to play with in the Milanese Charly Max club and, of course, the Beatles, who performed in Italy for the first and only time that year; that historic 24 June, the day of the Liverpool 4-piece’s Milan shows, Augusto Righetti’s band opened for them both for the afternoon and for the evening concerts.
We are therefore facing an album that carries legend in its grooves, and that has incredibly never been re-released on vinyl until today. This 180gr. black vinyl reissue gives back to the Beatles’ fans and the whole world another precious piece of an incredible and unrepeatable era!
