It is almost impossible to talk about Modena City Ramblers and understand their aesthetics and production without having an idea of the Italian socio-political situation of the early ’90s, when the collective was founded in the heart of the Emilia Romagna region. Ideologically left-winged, they could wisely combine words of strong social denouncement with traditional Irish music, auto-proclaiming themselves as a ‘combat folk’ or ‘patchanka Celtic’ band.
“Fuori Campo” is MCR’s fourth album, the first to slightly change the band’s style from what had been done previously. There are many contaminations: acoustic, ethnic, punk, folk rock and Irish reel dance music blend together here. This is also the record that contains one of the group’s most iconic tracks, “Celtica Patchanka”. Among the numerous contributes, there is even that of the Chilean writer Luis Sépulveda, who appears as a special guest in the title-track.
