Five years after their previous album “Foreste Interstellari,” HUNKA MUNKA, born Roberto Carlotto, is back, but now definitively a band thanks to the invaluable and constant involvement of Joey Mauro. The album is titled “Demoni e Dei,” a timeless vision of the eternal struggle between good and evil, light and darkness.
“Demoni e Dei” is also an album that traces a career that began in the late 1960s, when Roberto Carlotto, at the beginning of his career as a professional musician, was part of various groups including Big 66, Cuccioli, and collaborated with Ivan Graziani in the group Anonima Sound Ltd. His first solo album, “Dedicato a Giovanna G.,” was released in 1972. It was famous not only for its distinctive sound, thanks to the presence of a young guitarist like Ivan Graziani and on drums Nunzio “Cucciolo” Favia (ex-Osage Tribe and Dik Dik), but also for the special gatefold packaging that contained the LP in the shape of a toilet. Roberto Carlotto was also the keyboardist for the group Dik Dik from 1974 to 1977. The album includes some “reprises” of already known songs from the album “Dedicato a Giovanna G.” (“L’Aeroplano d’argento” and “Cattedrali di bagno”), other songs performed during Roberto Carlotto’s “militancy” in Dik Dik (“Ossessioni” and “Cavalli alati”), signature songs revisited in decidedly more aggressive versions, fully in keeping with the new album’s theme, where moments of (apparent) calm intertwine with powerful energy. The architect of this sonic power is Joey Mauro, a talented keyboardist from Lamezia Terme, known as one of the protagonists of Italo Dance. He reveals (as in his previous album Hunka Munka and other productions he has curated) a remarkable passion for hard rock, a passion that yields the best melodic hard prog. The lyrics are very interesting, perfectly in keeping with the music.
